Pegasus Reading Series is a monthly series presented by WordSpace showcasing writers in the North Texas area and beyond. Named ‘Best Poetry Night’ by the Dallas Observer in 2015, Sebastian Paramo and Courtney Marie host.
KIM KYUNG JU is a Seoul-based poet and performance artist, whose work has been translated into several languages and is widely anthologized in Korea. He has written and translated over ten books of poetry, essays, and plays. He is the recipient of the Korean government’s Today’s Young Artist Prize and the Kim Su-young Contemporary Poetry Award. His first book of poetry, I Am A Season That Does Not Exist In This World, sold over fifteen thousand copies. Excerpts from the book have appeared in prominent American literary journals and magazines such as Boston Review, Guernica, Gulf Coast, Drunken Boat, Circumference, and Hayden’s Ferry Review. Black Ocean Press will release the English-language translation of I Am a Season That Does Not Exist In This World (trans. Jake Levine) around Christmas 2015.
Apart from poetry, essay writing and translation, Kim’s plays have won numerous awards and have premiered at some of the largest venues in Korea, including the Sejong Center (the largest venue in Seoul). Currently arrangements are being made for an English version of his play Butterfly Sleep to be produced off Broadway in New York. Additionally there are plans for his plays Bred from the Eyes of a Wolf and Black Box to be translated and produced abroad. Most currently, Kim teamed up with the renowned Korean rapper Mc Meta for a poetry/hip hop collaborative project called Poetic Justice. Kim also produces a literature podcast, is the founding member and organizer of the Penguin Rhyme Club reading series / poetry collective, curates art exhibitions highlighting foreign artists (most recently Vladimir Kush), and edits / manages articles for the literature webzine Munjang.
JAKE LEVINE has translated a full length book of poetry, Kim Kyung Ju’s I AM A SEASON THAT DOES NOT EXIST IN THE WORLD, a book of experimental writing, Tomas Butkus’ GOD / THING, and a chapbook of poems by Kim Yi Deum. The recipient of numerous grants and awards, including funding from the Korean Translation Institute, a Korean Government scholarship, and a Fulbright scholarship, his translations, essays, and writing has appeared in places such as The New York Times, Boston Review, Guernica, Gulf Coast, The Literary Review, etc… Additionally, he writes a series of syndicated articles in the Korean literary magazine Munjang, translating and introducing contemporary American poets to a Korean general audience. He is the author of two poetry chapbooks, an editor at Spork Press, and is currently getting his PhD in comparative literature at Seoul National University.
KARISSA MORTON is originally from Des Moines, Iowa, & currently lives in Denton, Texas. She holds an MFA in poetry and has worked as a third grade teacher, writing tutor, literary editor, & most recently as an English instructor at the University of Cincinnati. Her poems appear in The Indiana Review, Guernica, The Paris-American, Crab Orchard Review, Devil’s Lake, Sonora Review, & elsewhere. She co-curates the blog collective On Sports.
